A tall and finely made white Statuary Marble Georgian chimneypiece. The wide corniced shelf rests above the plain frieze which is centred by a tablet depicting The Triumph of Love. Flanking the frieze are laurel wreathed endblocks above fielded jambs with corbels in the form of stylised fern fronds terminating in bellflowers. This antique fireplace exudes the simple elegance characteristic of the period. English, circa 1790.

A very fine and large cast iron and parcel gilt decorated antique Victorian fire grate in the Gothic Revival manner. The backplate is cast with five roundels behind the two barred grate with plain and spiral twist bars and knobbed cone finials. The grate is supported on an a pair of tall ornate andirons surmounted by cup and cover finials with foliate gilt decoration. The four sided gilt mounted stems are embellished with rope-twist bound foliate roundels above gilt detail on the splayed feet. English, late 19th century.

A large Neoclassical style cast iron Victorian fire surround. The central stylised urn with scrolling foliate fronds and a pair of rod and bead edged panels on the frieze are flanked by oval paterae on the endblocks. The stop fluted jambs are topped by long leaf capitals and the opening is framed with egg and dart banding. English, mid 19th century.

Early nineteenth-century Italian chimneypiece in Carrara marble, with a richly carved under-shelf and frieze. The recessed frieze has a central tablet carved with Venus in repose; this is flanked by two pairs of birds, each bearing a garland in their beaks. The endblocks are carved with large Medusa masks which rest on engaged fluted columns with delicately carved capitals of curling acanthus leaves. The fluted columned jambs gently widen to finish in an elegant base.

A highly ornate and rare antique stone fireplace surround in the Louis XV Rococo style exuberantly carved throughout with abundant floral and foliate detail. The moulded shelf with bead and reel edging rests above an embellished serpentine frieze centred by a stylised rocaille cartouche with floral trails flanked by scrolled acanthus corners. Small shell cartouche top tapering panels on the jambs which rest on sturdy footblocks.

A wide Arts and Crafts polished steel five barred antique Edwardian fire basket very much in the manner of Charles Voysey(1857 – 1941). The large grate, mounted with a pair of Baroque style finials, is supported to the front by a pair of tall elegant spire andirons raised on square columned legs.

A small and exquisite Queen Anne style cast iron and brass antique fire basket in the Baroque manner. The grate with burnished turned fire bars is supported to the front by a pair of very attractively styled brass standards with spiral columns, under conical gadrooned finials, on slender cabriole legs terminating in pad feet.

An attractive silvered metal six branch chandelier in the Neoclassical style with decorative cast detail. The elaborate baluster stem, with three cherubic masks around its neck, supports the scrolled arms which in turn support the elegant candle holders. The stem terminates in a reverse pineapple finial.

Relics from a penal past. A set of three tall and heavy cast iron Victorian or possibly Georgian prison gates found in Gloucestershire. Each complete with their large sturdy locks. English, early 19th century or earlier. Research on-going.

Prison cells in late Georgian and Victorian times were often open to the elements with only the gate between the inmate and the weather as shown in the last image of Gloucester Gaol in Georgian times.

An attractive Louis XVI antique fireplace surround in lightly veined Carrara Marble The moulded shelf rests above a panelled frieze bearing a delicately carved, ribbon tied olive leaf sprig. The frieze is flanked by a pair of foliate paterae on the endblocks above tapering panels embellished with further ribbon tied, olive leaf sprigs descending the jambs.

An attractive and delicately carved white Carrara marble antique fireplace surround in the Italian Imperio manner with inset Brescia Violette panels. The frieze with a central crown of laurel leaves flanked by a pair of Brescia Violette panels, echoed on the jambs, is flanked by floral paterae on the endblocks set above twin trophy panels on the jambs signifying Victory. An important, rare mid-18th century Georgian English Rococo antique fireplace surround in Statuary and Maurin Green Marble influenced by the designs of Sir Henry Cheere (1703-1781) and Isaac Ware (1704-1766). The serpentine shelf rests above a scrolling frieze centred by a carved spray of oak leaves flanked by simple floral rosettes on a bed of Maurin Marble. The end blocks are adorned with acanthus leaves and trailing oak sprigs above finely carved angled console jambs, with Maurin Marble side panels, supported on shaped footblocks. English circa 1750.

Notes: Part of our research revealed that a very similar chimneypiece originated in Woodcote House in Surrey. The house, rebuilt in 1750, was designed by Sir Henry Cheere and the sculptor was Isaac Ware. This chimneypiece bears a close resemblance to their designs. It is also related in style and quality to our SNo 9180.

A monumental French Renaissance style antique chimneypiece highly carved in creamy Caen Stone. The massive entablature, with its breakfront shelf centred by a podium above fruit and a grotesque mask, has a boldly carved frieze of mythical dragons and serpents amidst scrolling foliage. There are two large humorous figural carvings on the endblocks. To the left is the figure of a furtive peasant and to the right that of a lounging court jester. The whole is supported on a pair of free standing columns, with elaborate capitals, fronting the jambs.
French, mid 19th century.

Notes: Caen Stone is a light and creamy yellow Jurassic limestone formed approximately 167 million years ago and quarried near the City of Caen in north western France. It was used in the building of many historic French churches and abbeys and was also partially used in the construction of Canterbury Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London in England.

A brass set of Victorian fire tools and integral tool rests. The registration mark Rd62664 stamped on the shovel and tongs and registration mark Rd62665 stamped on the tool rests date the set from 1887 to 1888. Although the poker has no registration mark, it may have been worn off through use, it is clearly part of the set. English late 19th century

A substantial Regency fireplace surround in beautifully coloured and veined Ashburton Marble from the Lindhay Quarry in South Devon. The moulded shelf, set above a cushioned panel frieze, rests on a pair of tall half round tapering columns fronting the jambs. English, early 19th century.

Notes:In 1852 a Devon newspaper 'The Western Times', reported that some large blocks of marble had been excavated from quarries adjoining the ancient Stannary Town of Ashburton. It was suggested at the time that the marble be used for the making of chimneypieces as the veins and colour were considered very decorative and superior to that found in any other quarry in South Devon. This marble was still being quarried at the Linhay Quarry into the late 20th century.

A tall 18th century finely carved wood and polychrome figure of the Bohemian saint St. John Nepomuk(1345-1393). He was purportedly the confessor to the Queen of Bohemia and at the request of King Wenceslaus(1361-1419), King of the Romans and Bohemia, was drowned in the Vltava River in Prague for refusing to divulge the secrets of the confessional. Nepomuk is also believed to be the protector against floods and troubled waters and is considered a patron saint of bridges.
Bohemian, early 17th century but could possibly be earlier. (a/f)

Notes: Not the "Good King Wenceslaus"(907-935) of legend who is sung about in the carol of the same name whose life was based on the life of the historical Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia or Svatý Václav in Czech.
