A very fine Victorian register grate with a fox hunting theme. The cast iron and brass insert conforms to the style of the Aesthetic movement, with the exception of the rare gilt brass panels, cast in high relief with a horse and rider, a stag, a fox, a retriever and a hound. A rider's crop and a huntsman's horn form part of the decorative scheme. Likely to have been a special commission for a country residence!

A very fine chimneypiece with a striking simplicity of form, reminiscent of the work of Sir John Soane. Carved from dramatic dove grey Bardiglio Fiorito marble, the wide stepped shelf rests on two monumental jambs, which flank a large opening. One of the most striking chimneypieces we have come across!

A grand giltwood wall mirror in the manner of Thomas Johnson with a Rococo frame comprising c scrolls and foliate flourishes and surmounted by a ho-ho bird. A detail typical of Thomas Johnson is the inclusion of an animal, and here a goat teeters on a rocky outcrop. Johnson took inspiration from Aesop's fables, and the goat is a creature that featured in several of these tales. Original silvered plate.

A small and smart Georgian fire basket of serpentine form in cast iron and brass. The ornate fire back depicts Jonah and the whale as the creature is about to swallow the prophet. This is supported by brass shoulders engraved with urns, beneath which is a beautifully pierced apron with a Greek key decoration interspersed with scrolling foliate motifs.

A fine early nineteenth-century French Empire period duchesse brisée armchair with accompanying footstool. This set is in the original paint with applied gilded highlights. The restrained form embraces the new Empire style that emerged shortly after the Directoire period, with a lozenge decoration on the back, a popular motif reminiscent of the the ancient Egyptian discoveries made after Napoleon conquered the country. Both the chair and the footstool are supported by elegant tapered legs.

French, c.1805.

Later upholstery in good order, a very comfortable chair with overstuffed feather cushions.
