A very large and imposing English crystal chandelier of exceptional quality in the Victorian style. The 16 branch chandelier is truly a statement piece, with a long baluster stem from which emanates two tiers of swan neck arms, profusely hung with strings of beads, prisms and drops.

A fine Louis XVI chimneypiece in pine. The inverse breakfront shelf is mounted over a frieze which is beautifully carved with trailing olive foliage, and the central motif is a garland of roses over a bow. This is flanked by acanthus paterae typical of the period, over generous acanthus scrolled console jambs.

A fine early nineteenth-century French Empire period duchesse brisée armchair with accompanying footstool. This set is in the original paint with applied gilded highlights. The restrained form embraces the new Empire style that emerged shortly after the Directoire period, with a lozenge decoration on the back, a popular motif reminiscent of the the ancient Egyptian discoveries made after Napoleon conquered the country. Both the chair and the footstool are supported by elegant tapered legs.

French, c.1805.

Later upholstery in good order, a very comfortable chair with overstuffed feather cushions.

A very large and fine William IV register grate in the Rococo Revival style. The generous opening is framed by a Rococo border of stylised acanthus foliage, and centred by a rocaille motif. The opening comprises an upper bar with log spikes, and two lower bars above more foliate florishes.

A large and grand Victorian arched chimneypiece in white marble with original brass insert. The imposing shelf sits on a stepped undershelf supported by the large arched spandrel jambs, with a beautifully carved bound laurel detail to the opening. This is divided by a very fine foliate keystone. The whole is supported by generous footblocks. The original brass insert is decorated with finely hand chased repoussée work with stylised scrolling foliage, flowers and birds.

English, c.1880.

Please note that the insert is slightly lower than the opening and will need to be raised by the hearth, or the fireplace footblocks can be trimmed.

A fine Louis XVI chimneypiece in a very lightly mottled statuary marble, with fine ormolu mounts. The moulded shelf sits above a very fine frieze, mounted with floral and acanthus paterae. The mounts are very much in the manner of Pierre Gouthiere (1732-1813) who was appointed ciseliste, doreur, bronze chaser and gilder by Aux Menus Plaisirs du Roi, Palais de Versailles in France. This is supported by flat, stop fluted jambs with acanthus reed and husk adornment.

A fine early 18th century Queen Anne walnut cabinet on chest, in a beautifully figured walnut veneer. The top section comprises a cushion frieze, which opens to reveal a hidden chart drawer, over the cross-banded double door cabinet which opens to reveal a fully fitted interior of drawers and pigeonholes.
A waist moulding separates the two parts of the piece with an arrangement of two short over two long drawers in highly figured feather banded walnut, oak lined with brass handles.

A very fine and rare Anglo-Indian carved oak box settle in teak, very much based on the form of an Italian cassone. The back features three magnificently carved vignettes depicting an elephant fighting a tiger amongst palm trees, a ship at sea and lastly, a group of noblemen being drawn by oxen in a fine cart. These panels are bordered by a trailing vine decoration. The subjects would suggest a southern Indian, or possibly Ceylonese origin. The sinuous scrolling arms are carved to depict a mythical creature and they frame the box seat with a hinged lid, which has an elaborately pierced front panel.

A large and fine William IV chimneypiece in pencil veined Carrara marble by Phillip Wyatt, one of a pair we have for sale. The wide flat shelf over a stepped frieze which is flanked by the most beautifully carved palmette corbels in the Greek Revival manner. These are mounted on plain jambs.

This fireplace is one of a pair with stock no. 16385. English, c.1830.

Provenance: Mount Oswald, remodelled in 1830 by Philip Wyatt, son of James Wyatt in 1830.

The blockwork trumeau is centred by an armorial and rests on a large freize carved with floral spandrels in the Tudor Revival style, over cantilevered, moulded jambs. A signed bronze patinated plaster figure of Venus holding a torch, signed by Humphrey Hopper (1777-1841). The figure holds a torch aloft whilst also holding drapery about her body, as one foot rests on a jar, and her body rests against a Roman style dolphin.
Could be wired if desired. See 15536 for Hopper's model of a Vestal Virgin.

Notes: Humphrey Hopper (1765-1844) started his career as a stonemason. At the age of 36 he entered the Royal Academy Schools to study sculpture. He was a successful student, winning a silver medal in December 1802. Part of his output at the time was tasteful decorative work in plaster. This included graceful, classical nymphs and vestals designed to hold lamps, such as this piece.
