    An interesting Arts and Crafts fire basket, the back panel depicting the Day of Judgement within a medieval scene complete with a hilltop castle. God appears from swirling clouds, holding a ladder on which an angel pulls up the souls of the redeemed. In the foreground a crowd gathers around a hole where a man is being plunged into the depths of hell. This figure is intended to be licked by the flames of the fire in the grate, adding to the dramatic effect. The stylised sunflower brass andirons turn slightly outwards and are mounted on tapered legs.

    A rare and monumental cast iron Coalbrookdale antique fire grate identical to fire grate SNo 14374. The elaborately scrolled backplate featues a Bagot Goat jumping a fence. The substantial basket, with a strapwork apron centred by a lion mask, is supported by a pair of large and powerful panther head standards.

    Provenance: The registration mark 65 The Coalbrookdale Company registered September 6th 1841 number 814 can clearly be seen on the back.
    English, early to mid 19th century.

    Notes: The Bagot goat is believed to be Britain's oldest breed of goat and has lived semi-wild at Blithfield Hall in Staffordshire for over six hundred years.The Coalbrookdale Company, a foundry in Shropshire established in 1709, is probably most famous for building the world's first cast iron bridge erected and opened at Ironbridge in 1780, but it was also noted for its decorative ironwork an example of which is a set of gates opening into London's Hyde Park. The blast furnaces were closed down around 1820 but the foundries remained in use.

    Please note that the back plate was once broken the damage can be seen under the goat. It has been strapped on the back, so the grate is still functional.

    An iron and brass fire grate in the French Regence style with a turned two bar basket, above a brass vitruvian apron and surmounted by a pair of flambeau finials. The rectangular backplate depicts a procession of playful cherubs one of which appears to be riding a goat. The grate is supported to the front by a pair of ornate Louis XIV style andirons surmounted by further by flambeau finials.
    Probably French, circa 1900.

    A 19th century Rococo style bronze mounted cast iron griffin fire basket. The scroll edged backplate, with a central medallion and leafy fronds, rests behind the bow fronted grate which is supported by a pair of large, bronze monopodial griffin with splayed claw feet. Each griffin is impressed on the back with the registration number 'R N 116834'. English, circa 1870.

The whole is supported to the front by tall bulbous bronze baluster andirons in ornate feet centred by lion masks with rings in their mouths. The plain bronze apron can be drawn out to reveal a tray for ashes.

    A large cast iron and brass mounted Gothic Revival firegrate in the manner of A W N Pugin. The high, trefoil backplate, centred by a plain cartouche above an arch, has sides swooping down to the low two barred grate. A pair of upright seated, brass lions mounted on spiral podiums and holding simple, escutcheon shaped shields, form the integral andirons raised on large peg feet.
    English late 19th century.

    A large cast iron and brass Neoclassical style firegrate with Baroque influences. The shaped backplate is centred by a floral medallion above a foliate panel. The two barred grate is supported by a pair of tall columnar standards, with lion mask roundels and surmounted by large brass lidded urn finials, above stylised paw feet. There is a registration mark RD 145568 for 1890 on the one of the standards.

    A rare cast iron, Rococo Revival, Coalbrookdale firegrate. The unusual serpentine, lobed back rests behind the bow fronted three bar basket. The apron, bearing a central zoomorphic mask, is flanked by scrolled acanthus enriched sides supported on splaying legs on block feet. The last image below is from an illustration in the Coalbrookdale Castings Catalogue, shown for use within their dramatic Shakespearean 'Tempest' figural chimneypiece. English, circa 1850.

    Coalbrookdale is a village in the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire, England, containing a settlement of great significance in the history of iron ore smelting. The Coalbrookdale Company and Foundry was established there by Abraham Darby in 1701.

    A rather fine and very large Georgian style steel and brass fire basket in the manner of Robert Adam. The arched backplate, with a central sunburst, rests behind a three bar, bow fronted grate cradled on either side by finely engraved shoulders within a beaded edging and surmounted by a pair of small engraved urn finials. The serpentine apron, with etched, linked lozenges sweeps around to a pair of tapering engraved standards surmounted by a pair of large urn finials.

    An attractive Edwardian cast iron, steel and brass mounted firegrate in the George III style, made by Thomas Elsley of London. The arched backplate, set with a scrolled shield surrounded by trailing floral foliage and ribbons, bears the name ELSLEY and the date 1904 within an oval reserve to the back. The three bar bow fronted grate, with rocaille cast brass spandrels, a pair of small brass finials and a pierced brass serpentine apron with incised foliate and zoomorphic motifs, is supported by a pair of charming columned legs topped by globe finials. English, circa 1904.

  • A Handsome Late Georgian Brass Fire Grate Reserved

    Stock: 15068

    A fine brass and cast iron fire grate, in the George III style. The high shaped back with a central cartouche depicts a double headed eagle and shield, held by a man and a woman. The bars of the grate are elegantly bowed, and sit above a richly embellished apron which is pierced and profusely engraved with a ribboned and floral design. The andirons are surmounted by steeple finials and supported by curved shoulders which are also finely engraved.
    English, 19th century incorporating a significant amount earlier 18th century elements.

    Notes - In heraldry the double-headed eagle is a charge associated with the concept of Empire and is frequently found with links to the Roman/Byzantine Empire and also the Holy Roman Empire, which after its dissolution, the double-headed eagle was retained by the Austrian Empire, and served also as the coat of arms of the German Confederation.
