An enchanting, romantic 'Tangled by Roses', oil on board Victorian painting of a maiden wandering in a garden in the manner of John Everett Millais. It bears the monogram J.E.M. and the date 1869 to the bottom right hand corner. English, circa 1860.

Notes: The handling of the foliage and flowers is extremely fine, with an enormous amount of detail. The image is infused with symbolism, the purity of the girl's white dress and the roses which symbolise love are studded with thorns, to warn of the dangers of love. Ivy is a symbol of eternity and fidelity.

An elegant and ornate Regency Empire style brass & copper mounted fireplace fender with its original integral fire tool rests. The cut and scooped panels, with a central oval paterae framed by ribboned floral and foliate detail, flanked by further paterae ovals and with bead trim, are supported by a pair of tapering finial topped standards the design of which is repeated in the tool rests.

English, late 19th century.

A very large cast iron Victorian fire grate attributed to A.W.N Pugin. The arched backplate with Gothic tracery rests behind the two barred grate which is supported at the front by a pair of tall standards, raised on sturdy splayed feet, each surmounted by large ornate brass finials which bear monogrammed shields set on stylised foliate roundels. English, circa 1850.

The breakfront shelf, above dentil and foliate detailed bands, rests above the stop fluted frieze with its decorative central panel of an urn surrounded by scrolling foliage and flowers.The end blocks are set with rosette paterae and the opening is framed by strings of linked buds and ribboned flowers.

A large and handsome Victorian brass and cast iron hooded enclosed fire grate in the Baroque manner. This impressive grate has a high shaped hood with an integral flue connection, it is inset with an ornate repousse brass panel above a deep grate surmounted by a pair of brass finials and with turned spindle bars along the apron. The whole is supported by a pair of fine pierced brass baluster standards raised on triple paw feet. English, circa 1870.

This type of inclosed fire basket with integral flue connection is ideal for use with fire surrounds with large openings and or small chimney flues, as the basket is connected directly to the flue in the same way as a stove.

A very large and fine example of a Victorian burnished cast iron Coalbrookdale chimney piece in the Georgian Neoclassical manner of Robert Adam. The decorative urn on the freeze beneath the wide shelf is flanked by swags which in turn are flanked by pairs on lidded urns on the end blocks above twin pilasters with descending foliate detail.
English, the Coalbrookdale foundry mark and the number 367840 are on the back as is shown in the last image and date it to 1881. .

A fine brass and cast iron fire grate, in the George III style. The high shaped back with a central cartouche depicts a double headed eagle and shield, held by a man and a woman. The bars of the grate are elegantly bowed, and sit above a richly embellished apron which is pierced and profusely engraved with a ribboned and floral design. The andirons are surmounted by steeple finials and supported by curved shoulders which are also finely engraved.
English, 19th century incorporating a significant amount earlier 18th century elements.

Notes - In heraldry the double-headed eagle is a charge associated with the concept of Empire and is frequently found with links to the Roman/Byzantine Empire and also the Holy Roman Empire, which after its dissolution, the double-headed eagle was retained by the Austrian Empire, and served also as the coat of arms of the German Confederation.

A finely carved early George III giltwood wall mirror in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, surmounted by a large Ho-Ho bird perched with wings outspread. The mirror with its original mercury glass also is framed by gilt acanthus scrolls, rosettes and foliate detail. The mirror has a lovely rubbed and burnished surface. English, circa.1765.

The Ho Ho bird myth originated in Japan and is similar to the phoenix. It was said to bring luck and symbolise good fortune. Carvings of these birds appeared in England in the 18th century on Georgian furniture and most commonly mounted on mirrors.
