A wonderful Louis XIV fireplace in a beautifully worn limestone. This fireplace is a rare survival from the reign of the Sun King, and conforms to the drama of the Baroque, with a beautifully carved cushion moulding, centred by a cartouche.
French, c.1700.
Please note that the back has been left rough as it was originally set inside a wall, but we can cut this flat for a more modern installation if desired. It would look absolutely wonderful with a Delft tiled interior, or with a boldly cast fireback.

This cartouche is framed with foliate scrollwork which is echoed on the corners of the panelled frieze, and also on the canted, console jambs.

A most beautiful Louis XV chimneypiece in a dramatically veined campan mélange marble, in many ways surpassing the beauty of breche violette. The veining of khaki greens and deep violet ripples across the peachy base tone, it really is remarkably unique. The moulded shelf rests over a panelled serpentine frieze which is centred by a boldly carved Rococo shell cartouche. This is echoed on the endblocks which are mounted above the canted console jambs.
French, mid-19th century.
Campan marble comes from the high French Pyrenees, where it has been quarried since Antiquity. The area produces a variety of beautiful, richly veined coloured marbles, such as Campan Gran Mélange, Campan Vert, Ribbon Campan and the deep red Rouge Griotte. These were much prized and used in the apartments in Versailles during the reign of Louis XVI for chimney pieces and wall panels. Campan Vert and Campan Gran Mélange are extensively used on the walls of the Escalier de la Reine (the Queen’s stairs) Versailles.

Antique Fireplace Mantels and Chimneypieces in the Rococo Style of the 18th and 19th centuries. This delicate and playful style, regarded by some at the time as risqué, was established in the 1730’s in France and quickly became widespread throughout Europe. Rococo fireplaces, mantels and chimneypieces in marble, stone and wood ( frequently gilded in the 18th century ), were again prolific in the Rococo Revival period of the early to mid 19th century mostly in Italy and France but many fine and grand examples were exported in great numbers to England, Ireland and Scotland. During the reign of Louis XV and the preceding Regence period a more feminine frivolity and intimacy held sway in the arts as a reaction to the monumental formality of the Baroque period. In England and Germany the Rococo style came under the influence of the Oriental. This was evident in the chimneypiece mantels of Thomas Chippendale. At its best the Rococo style was meant to lighten the mood, to be enjoyed and to encourage gaiety and delight.
Our collection of Antique Rococo fireplaces, chimneypiece and mantels, contains an impressive range in marble, stone and wood. They will enhance any home whether you live in a period house or if you simply want to bring an element of period features to a more modern room design.
