The most charming Regency bullseye fireplace in slate, which has been cut across the grain to make a feature of the natural striations in the stone. Ordinarily slate fireplaces of this period were painted, but this one was carefully made to showcase the beauty of the stone.
The slender, moulded shelf, sits over a cushion moulded frieze and jambs.
English, c.1820.

A substantial Regency fireplace surround in beautifully coloured and veined Ashburton Marble from the Lindhay Quarry in South Devon. The moulded shelf, set above a cushioned panel frieze, rests on a pair of tall half round tapering columns fronting the jambs. English, early 19th century.
Shown here with firegrate SNo14748 not included.
Notes:In 1852 a Devon newspaper 'The Western Times', reported that some large blocks of marble had been excavated from quarries adjoining the ancient Stannary Town of Ashburton. It was suggested at the time that the marble be used for the making of chimneypieces as the veins and colour were considered very decorative and superior to that found in any other quarry in South Devon. This marble was still being quarried at the Linhay Quarry into the late 20th century.

Notes: Varieties of Portoro Marble have been found in different parts of the world the most beautiful comes from the quarries on the Island of Palmaria, in the Gulf of La Spezia, Italy. The Portoro used to make this fireplace could well have come from there. A rare 19th century Statuary Marble and ormolu chimneypiece in the French Regency style with a large, exquisitely carved 18th century panel after Clodion (1738 – 1814).
The fireplace, originally in the drawing room of Brook House, located at 113 Park Lane in Mayfair London, was made to accommodate the extraordinary18th century panel which was probably acquired during a Grand Tour.
The panel depicts 'Le Triomphe d'Amphitrite' who can be seen in the centre riding a dolphin attended by putti, tritons(mermen) and nereids(mermaids). Finely applied ormolu, set beneath the cornice shelf and on the jambs and sides, frames the panel and there are intricately detailed ormolu rams heads and tumbling festoons adorning each jamb above which are corbels embellished with large ormolu acanthus leaves.
Provenance: Brook House, Park Lane, Mayfair, London. English late 1860s.
Notes on Amphitrite & Poseidon.
Amphitrite was one of the fifty Nereids who were attendants of the sea-god Poseidon. On first seeing Amphitrite Poseidon fell deeply in love and ardently pursued her. When she fled his wooing he sent dolphins after her who finally persuaded her to return to become his bride. The bearded figure on the far right of the panel could well be Poseidon himself.
Notes on Brook House.
Brook House was built in the French style from 1867-1869 by the architect Thomas Henry Wyatt for Sir Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, the 1st Lord Tweedmouth. The interiors were designed by the renowned 19th century decorators Wright & Mansfield who were strongly influenced by French design. Please see photo below of the Brook House Drawing Room which shows the fireplace in situ. The photograph is courtesy of the Country Life Archives and was taken by Charles Latham in 1902 for The King Magazine and later included in 'London Interiors' written by John Cornforth and published by Country Life.
Ernest Cassell, private banker to Edward VII, bought Brook House from Lord Tweedmouth in 1904 and lived there with his granddaughter Edwina Ashley who later became Countess Mountbatten when she married Louis Mountbatten in 1922. Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma was the uncle of the Queen's consort, the Duke of Edinburgh. Their marriage was attended by the then King and Queen and the Prince of Wales and the reception was held in Brook House. The couple later moved into a suite on the third floor. The house was subsequently demolished and redeveloped in the 1930's.

A late Regency antique fireplace carved out of Welsh Heather Blue slate, with bold acanthus scrolled endblocks above panelled reeded jambs. The central tablet on the frieze represents the Prince of Wales Feathers and is his Heraldic Badge, consisting of three ostrich feathers emerging from a coronet above a ribbon bearing the motto " ICH DIEN " which translates as " I SERVE ". As well as being used in royal heraldry, the badge is sometimes used to symbolise Wales and particularly the Welsh Rugby Union.
Welsh circa 1820. Photo before restoration.
Notes: Welsh Heather Blue Slate is mined in The Penrhyn Quarry located in Bethesda, the largest of the Welsh slate Quarries. It is unlike any other slate in the world. In Victorian times it was most commonly used for roofing tiles but has also often frequently featured in designs for prominent London projects as at St Pancras & Kings Cross Stations, Buckingham Palace and at Number 10 Downing Street the official residence of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The Regency period in Great Britain emerged after King George III was deemed unfit to rule - his son ruled as his proxy during this time and was known as the Prince Regent. Although The Regency period lasted a mere nine years (1811-1820), the Regency aesthetic extended beyond this time, encompassing emerging trends in literature, fashion and architecture - as is evidenced in the intricate designs of antique Regency fireplaces and chimneypieces.
A period of elegance
The Regency style is often noted for its elegance and advancements in the fine arts and architecture - throughout this era major social, political and economic changes were also taking place. During this period Regency fireplaces evolved to accommodate the larger mirrors favoured at the time - fireplaces were consequently made lower to allow for this new fashion, a technique already used in French fireplace designs many years prior.
A return to antiquity
Antique Regency fireplaces embody a departure from the glamorous, intricate designs of the past, into a simpler, more austere style. The major source of inspiration for Regency fire surrounds was found in Greek and Roman antiquity, from which designers borrowed both structural and ornamental elements. Antique Regency fire surrounds reflect a more reserved approach to the use of classical ornamentation. Corniced shelves were made simpler, and reeding became a popular decorating technique in many designs. Regency fireplaces embodied a more refined elegance than previous Georgian or French styles, featuring smooth lines and gentle curves. Due to their classic design, these fireplaces have become increasingly popular as additions to more modern interiors - incorporating Regency décor brings a classical and elegant feel to any home.
