A Grand Repousse Copper antique Fireplace Surround.
Attributed to John Pearson (1859—1930) Master Coppersmith and founder member of the Guild of Handicrafts.
This elaborately decorated fireplace on its mahogany ground follows a maritime theme depicting mythical sea creatures in the deep and Galleons riding the waves in rolling seas all typical of Pearson's work.
English circa 1900.
Notes: In early life John Pearson worked with William de Morgan developing his trademark designs and creations of mythological animals, birds, sea creatures, dragons and galleons, fanciful trees & fruit, all to be very evident throughout his life in his repousse copper work. In 1888 C R Ashbee, the designer and social idealist, offered him the chance to be a founder member of the Guild of Handicraft, a co-operative of Craftsmen being set up in Whitechapel, London and he accepted the offer. He resigned some years later following a dispute with his colleagues but continued to work independently mostly in repousse copper metalware, producing chargers, vases, firescreens, mirror frames and the like.
Both Liberty and Morris sold his work in this period. In 1929, he closed his workshop and retired to Canvey Island in Essex where, a few months later, he died. At his death, his occupation was described as 'art connoisseur'.

A rare and unusual Art Nouveau polished cast iron chimneypiece very much in the
manner of the Scottish architect, designer, water colourist and artist
Charles Rennie Mackintosh (7 June 1868 – 10 December 1928).
This chimneypiece is identical to and made in the same series as our chimneypiece SNo 12624 now sold, but without the original woodgrain finish. It was built in two sections in the early 1900s by Wilson & Mathieson at their ironworks 'The Scotch Foundry' in Leeds. The foundry marks, Rd No. 393149, Design No. 100, can be seen on the back of the plaque please see image below
The two gently arched mirrors on the overmantle are framed by three pairs of tall lotus topped trees themselves framing three further tall slender stylised trees.
The frieze of the fire surround has an elaborately designed inset central plaque depicting a romantic landscape with a sickle moon rising over a distant mountain range, a north star, and a symbolic river entwining the trees. A bluebird, butterfly and dragonfly are in flight above a lake which is gently lapping against a shore in the foreground. Peering over the mountains to the right is the sleepy face of a setting sun. The plaque is framed by three Tulip Trees, there are two further trees set within niches on the frieze on either side and yet two more very tall variations on the tapering jambs.
English circa 1900.

Stock: 12624
A rare and unusual Art Nouveau fireplace mantel in the manner of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Built in two sections in the early 1900s in cast iron
with the original well-executed and detailed faux woodgrain, painted pattern,
it features classic slender and intricate, Art Nouveau tree and plant detail which is also somewhat reminiscent of the style of artist illustrator, Aubrey Beardsley. The central plaque, fitted separately, is also cast iron, but patinated dark bronze. It shows three Tulip trees with a double ribbon threading through them, against a detailed background showing left to right -.a rising quarter moon over a distant mountain range, in the midground the top of a pyramid and stylised North Star; to the right is a setting sun with human facial features; in the foreground the sea laps against the shore with a bluebird, butterfly and dragonfly in flight above. Research is ongoing but the styling and features are clearly derived from The Glasgow School of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. See notes below.
NOTES : CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH. Throughout his life, Mackintosh displayed a singular style, one that ran closely with those of his contemporaries, but still had its own flair. One of his signature elements was a highly stylized rose. You can find it on a number of his pieces, whether architecturally or in paintings. He utilized vertical lines in long succession, peaceful symmetry, and tone saturation in paint and materials. The lines, textures, and figures were a pleasing hybrid of nouveau and deco. His less architectural work still maintained a bone of structure that was very Mackintosh. Human figures and flower stems were long and lean, curving like ceiling trusses.
On the back of the plaque are the moulded marks for Wilson and Mathieson, The Scotch Foundry, Leeds, Registered No. 393149, Design No. 100.

Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Arts & Crafts fireplaces
Our collection of antique Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Arts & Crafts fireplaces features chimneypieces in marble, wood, metal and ceramic. Any of our antique fireplaces would bring fresh design and a unique focal point to both period and modern rooms.
Art Nouveau: an entirely new style
Art Nouveau emerged in the early 1890s as a reaction to the academic art of the 19th Century. Decorative, sensual, and entirely new, it took inspiration from the natural world, particularly the curved forms of flowers and plants. Characteristic motifs include swirling lines, delicate tendrils, exotic figures and elaborate geometry.
Art Nouveau furniture tended to feature complex designs with curved shapes, and a high-quality finish, like varnishing or polishing, was considered essential. It didn’t replace other styles of furniture, but was regarded as an expensive ‘art furniture’ category. Art Nouveau remained popular until the First World War, but then fell out of style in favour of Art Deco and Modernism.
Art Nouveau fireplaces
Art Nouveau fireplaces had their own unique style. They often featured organic elements, such as stylised flowers and swooping, swirling vines, giving the impression they were ‘growing’ up the sides of chimneys. As well as these natural flourishes, Art Nouveau fireplaces tended to accentuate geometric shapes and vertical lines. Tile inserts were another common element, and ‘tube lining’, a technique which created raised lines on the surface of a tile, was used to make the decorative, whimsical designs appear more prominent.
The arrival of Art Deco
Art Deco first appeared in France just before the First World War, and lasted throughout the roaring 20s and the Depression-worn 30s. It was characterised by an energetic eclecticism, simultaneously drawing on tradition and celebrating modernity. It was influenced by the vibrant colours of Fauvism, the geometric shapes of Cubism and the artistic stylings of Japan, China, India, Persia, ancient Egypt and the Maya civilisation.
Art Deco furniture combined exotic and rare materials, like ebony, mahogany and mother of pearl, with fine craftsmanship, and represented luxury, exuberance and glamour. It featured bold geometric shapes, clean lines and rich colours. Furniture was usually polished to a very high sheen, which added to its opulence.
Art Deco fireplaces
Art Deco fireplaces were no exception to the trend for luxurious, extravagant design, combining understated lines with spectacular flourishes. In the 1930s new materials came into use, including stainless steel and chrome. These materials were redolent of the modern, mechanised world that Art Deco celebrated. Many Art Deco fireplaces made use of these sleek, reflective materials, combining them with highly lacquered wood to striking effect. The 1930s also heralded new mass production techniques, which brought Art Deco fireplaces and furniture to the middle classes instead of just the fabulously wealthy.
The Arts & Crafts movement
The Arts & Crafts movement began in Britain around 1880 and became popular in Europe and North America until 1920, before emerging in Japan as the Mingei movement. It was one of the most far-reaching and influential design movements in modern history. It developed in response to the effects of industrialisation and the perceived impoverished state of the decorative arts.
Arts & Crafts fireplaces
The Arts & Crafts movement championed traditional craftsmanship and simple forms, and often featured romantic, medieval or folk-inspired decoration. As such, many Arts & Crafts fireplaces were handcrafted, and, like the Art Nouveau fireplaces that came after them, were influenced by natural forms. They featured a variety of different materials, including brick, stone, cast iron, terracotta and tile.
