    GENEROUS AND GRAND:
    A very fine giant of a grate, in the early Georgian style, fashioned in polished steel and cast iron, it's breadth and depth speaking of strength and presence. The large basket with a pair of stylised polished steel finials is fronted by a cut steel serpentine apron centred by a boar's head amid scrolling floral motifs supported on either side by a pair of tall standards with elongated polished steel urn finials above simple column legs.

    A unique and elegant Arts and Crafts bow fronted fire basket on a grand scale with a delicate pierced brass apron of floral motifs, a pair of tall slender andirons, the ball finials etched with stylised suns resting on brass ball and claw feet. Identical, except for the andirons, to one in the Great Chamber at Gilling Castle shown below in a late 19th century photo. English circa 1890.

    A fine Edwardian cast iron antique fire grate. The high front has an embossed repousse brass panel with a floral motif set above the grate, surrounded by stylised bead and reel edging . The grate has an original firebrick interior and is mounted with a pair of brass urn finials set above vertical serpentine fire bars and is flanked by a pair taller baluster standards with squat scrolled feet.

    A curious cast iron antique Victorian fire grate with an ornate Rococo style fireback decorated with a florally embellished rocaille crest set above a Bacchanalian scene. The basket, with large chained bar circles, is supported by a pair of barley twist, acanthus decorated standards set on peg feet.

    A large polished iron Georgian style fire basket. The sunburst backplate behind the four bar bow fronted grate, the beaded and engraved spandrels above a decorative cut and pierced apron flanked by oval medallions together with the four urn finials are all typical of the Adam style.

    A large and unusually tall Regency pierced brass serpentine firegrate, with elaborate urn finials, and a cast iron fireback decorated with mythical sea creatures and a delicate maiden shepherdess under a tree.     A SPLENDID AND GRAND 19th CENTURY FIRE GRATE IN BRASS AND IRON with bronze feet. The two magnificent winged Griffins fronting the low slung deep log basket, embellished with five floral brass studs under the bowed firebars, over pretty C scrolled, central shell Rocaille brass detail. There are two slender topped urns atop the firebars and brass shoulders leading up to the later ornate fireback.

    A large Irish cast iron Fire Grate in the late Georgian manner, with brass clad front and pierced brass apron below the four shaped fire bars. This fire grate has its original brass front but the carcass was very damaged and has been rebuilt.

    A large cast iron and bronze " Nautilus " log grate made in the nineteenth century by The Nautilus Fire Company of Yeovil, Somerset. The side floral decoration in the Renaissance manner, on four iron wheels, the front bar posts with large bronze spiral finials, a scrolled bronze canopy which revolves forward and back to reduce the airflow, and bronze trim either side.
    English mid to late 19th century.

    NOTES : When Queen Victoria had Nautilus fire grates installed at Balmoral Castle and Osborne House demand for them grew substantially. The design by the Petter family firm was based on the internal shape of the Nautilus shell by means of which the fumes and smoke circulated in a chamber before being drawn out through the flue.

    A large brass, steel and antique cast iron fire grate in the Georgian manner of Robert Adam. The pierced and engraved serpentine apron, flanked by a pair of tall obelisk styled supports raised on cluster four column supports. There is a crown stamp with the letters SC on the upper left polished return, possibly indicating a governmental, ministerial or institutional provenance.

    A rare firegrate in the Mid Georgian Chippendale Rococo manner with large cabriole brass legs topped with flamed urn finials, with shell front motif flanking the serpentine brass apron under the bowed firebars which themselves are topped with knopped finials. English 19th century.

Baronial, imposing, handsome, describes this grate, with dual wolfhound monopodea andirons...rings in their mouths and paw feet joined by downswept side rails to the foliate cast back, with trefoil top flourish.
