ELIZABETHAN BRONZE ANDIRONS :
A substantial, tall and heavy pair of cast bronze antique firedogs in the Elizabethan manner. Dated 1561 .The attatched image shows an identical pair in the Neo Gothic stone chimneypiece in the long drawing room in Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire, a Norman Castle dating from 1153 which was reconfigured in the 1920s by the Eighth Earl of the Berkeley family in continuous residence for 800 years, into a stately home which might suggest that the identical andirons shown in the advert from the Connoisseur Magazine in 1920 shown as the last image below were purchased by The Georgian Galleries, King St., St James in London.
English 19th century, possibly earlier.
